Family is About Love, Not Genetics
To all people who work with children:
I would like to remind you all of the dangers of assuming that the children you work with all have a "mommy and daddy". You may have the best of intentions when you refer to someone's parent(s) in this way, but in reality you are perpetuating the idea that it is safe to assume that everyone's family consists of one mother, one father, and their biological children. The fact is, not all families fit this dynamic. By assuming that every child has a mother and father at home, it is incredibly easy to ostracize, embarrass, or belittle someone, whether or not it is intentional. Family is about love, not genetics. Please keep that in mind and be careful with the terms that you use.
